My favorite dumplings: Pork, shrimp and green onions pan-fried dumplings + har gaw
Last month, I had the pleasure of checking out Dumpling Shop on Monkland Avenue as their guest! Dumpling Shop is a brand new restaurant, offering many different types of yummy dumplings (vegetarian options too!) as well as a dim sum style dish with all your favorites (available during the day only). Their dumplings menu comes in three options: steamed, pan-fried or in a soup. Of course, we tried all three:
- Pork, shrimp and green onions pan-fried dumplings
- Pork and cabbage dumplings in clear broth
- Chive, egg and shrimp steamed dumplings
- Dim sum brunch plate (chef’s choice) : har gaw (shrimp dumplings), shao mai (pork dumplings), chiuchow ravioli, lo mai gai (wrapped rice with meat), steamed bean curd roll, pork cha siu bao (BBQ pork bun)

Overall, we enjoyed a nice meal at Dumpling Shop. These weren’t the greatest dumplings on earth, as there were some hits and misses, but globally speaking, everything was very good. My favorites were the Pork, shrimp and green onions pan-fried dumplings, in terms of filling and cooking method. The filling on these (and generally at most dumpling places) was very well done and tasty (they’re also my favorite). They were perfectly pan-fried on the outside and still soupy and juicy on the inside, which is key. The Pork and cabbage dumplings in clear broth were also very good and because of the broth they were resting in, extra juicy and moist. The seasoning and filling was also quite nice. The Chive, egg and shrimp steamed dumplings on the other hand were slightly over-cooked and thus dry on the inside. With that said, it could have been because of the filling; egg in my opinion does not make a great and juicy dumpling filling. The Dim sum brunch plate overall was good, but because I’m picky, I like to be able to choose what I’m getting, which is not the case with this dish (you are served the chef’s choices). With that said, the har gow, BBQ pork bun and wrapped rice were very good. If you’re in the area and looking for a quick spot to grab some dumplings, Dumpling Shop is worth the stop! I definitely recommend the pan-fried pork and shrimp dumplings 🙂
