Monsieur B: excellent French BYOW restaurant (Plateau)

Restaurant: Monsieur B
Restaurant type: French, new French, bistro, BYOW, tasting menu at $59
Prices: $14-$20 entrées, $24-$34 mains

Date: Friday April 19th 2019
Table of: 13
My favorite dishes: Gnocchi + Ravioli

In April, my friends and I celebrated my bachelorette party at Monsieur B! Monsieur B is a small French bistro/restaurant, located on Villeneuve just off of St-Denis. I’d seen this restaurants many times before and had always wanted to try it out but never got around to it, so I was very pleasantly surprised to find myself there for my bachelorette party dinner (it was somewhat of a surprise party). The menu is quite simple, offering only a handful of options for entrées and for mains, but a lot looked delicious and it was hard to make a choice. In the end, I opted for the $59 tasting menu and the following dishes:

  • Duo of canapés
  • Root vegetable soup of the day
  • Pan-fried gnocchi, snails, maitake mushrooms, cream of artichokes and parmesan
  • Ravioli and Côte-Nord crab broth, ricotta and bacon
  • Chocolate dessert

Everything was absolutely delicious and I loved it! The highlights were of course the two dishes that I ordered: the gnocchi and the ravioli (yes, I really like pasta). The gnocchi were perfectly pan-fried, the snails garlicky and the cream of artichokes really brought everything together nicely. This entrée tasted great! As for the ravioli, the taste of the crab was overwhelming (in a good way) in the dish and just what I wanted. The dish was comprised of three nicely sized ravioli, stuffed with fresh crab meat and swimming in a delicious crab broth, with a nice dollop of ricotta cheese and some bacon. The only thing I would change about this dish would be the bacon; I would have preferred crispy pieces of bacon atop the ravioli, just like the ricotta was, as opposed to wet bacon in the broth but aside from that, another delicious dish.

The root vegetable soup, although very simple, was also very good. Unfortunately, by the time the dessert came around, I was no longer hungry, so my friends ate it, but it was very good and chocolatey.

Overall, we enjoyed an excellent meal at Monsieur B and I highly recommend it to all. I have my own criteria when it comes to reviewing restaurants, which I also use on my Instagram account (@elisebgravel). It’s very simple, there are only three points: the quality of the food (on 10), the price (from $ to $$$$$) and the following question: would I go back?

So, here is my review of Monsieur B:
Food: 9/10
Price: $$$
Would I go back?: Yes!
